Northern Marianas bishop-elect: Won't shy from tough issuesWhen the Rev. Ryan Jimenez received a recent, life-changing phone call from a Vatican representative, he was having breakfast with friends at a Saipan bowling-alley cafe. One of his first thoughts, said Jimenez, was fear and apprehension of whether he was up to the task. Pope Francis appointed him to take on a role that was “a lot to process,” he said. The caller, Archbishop Martin Krebs, who oversees Vatican affairs in the Oceania region, which stretches from the Mariana Islands to New Zealand, had just told Jimenez that Pope Francis has appointed him bishop.
