When one barge in a tow of 19 sideswiped a bridge in Vicksburg on Thursday, it was the fifth occurrence of its kind in nine days. The public doesn't generally feel the impact of a barge striking the railroad bridge over the Mississippi River. Even the city itself isn't greatly affected. The delay, the damage to ships and the overall disturbance of an accident is absorbed by the towing and railroad industries, but it is a significant event nonetheless. When it happens nearly every other day for two weeks, the concern heightens. The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River is the investigative agency for these incidents, the causes of which are still being determined.
