Chula Vista — The Sweetwater Union High School District will pay $7.3 million to settle a lawsuit filed by a contractor five years ago amid a pay-to-play scandal that would ultimately see its former superintendent sentenced to jail time and unseat all but one school board member. HAR Construction sued the district in 2011, two years after Sweetwater signed deals with the builder worth more than $15 million for construction and renovation projects at Southwest Middle School and Southwest High School. According to the settlement, which Sweetwater trustees unanimously approved Monday, numerous disputes arose over payment and the timely completion of the work. District officials said in 2011 that HAR was fired after the contractor failed “to execute work in an efficient manner to stay on schedule.” HAR blamed delays on Sweetwater, and said the projects were poorly managed and the district was cutting corners.
