San Mateo County sheriff says heart condition forces retirementSan Mateo County Sheriff Greg Munks said Friday a longtime heart condition has prompted him to step down from the position — an unexpected announcement as deputies said his health condition had not been known to most in the department. Munks, 61, went on medical leave, leaving Undersheriff Carlos Bolanos to serve as acting sheriff. “After much thought and consultation with my family and doctor, I have made the difficult decision to retire,” Munks said in a statement. “A heart procedure scheduled for July 11 is the third time I have attempted to correct a condition that, while not life-threatening, does affect my quality of life and my ability to maintain a full-time work schedule.” The Board of Supervisors was tasked with figuring out how to fill the two years left in Munks’ term. Bolanos, who was chief of the Redwood City Police Department for 12 years, had previously announced plans to run for sheriff in 2018 and has been endorsed by Munks.
