The Southwest New Mexico Council of Governments is dealing with the fallout of fraudulent check writing from the organization’s bank account in March. According to SWNMCOG Executive Director Priscilla Lucero, the council was stripped of $37,000 after Michael Stone, 48, of Rio Rancho, allegedly wrote a number of bad checks, putting the council in financial trouble. During its annual board of directors meeting last week, Lucero told the board that she and her staffers are working with the bank to get their money back, and are using Silver City attorney Robert Scavron to help get them even more money from the perpetrator. “We had some reserves of about $40,000, which I immediately had to take and put about $20,000 of that to put into a new checking account to provide payroll,” Lucero said. “I immediately made the decision to contact the executive committee and we decided to open a new account at a new bank. … Three months later, and we still don’t have our monies back from the bank.” Read more: www.scdailypress.com/site/2016/07/05/check-fraud-puts-council-of-governments-in-bind/
