Swastika graffiti burned into a third-floor bathroom ceiling at Keene State College’s largest dorm has heightened concerns among some at the college of a broad-based rise in offensive speech and white nationalism since the election of President-elect Donald J. Trump. The graffiti was originally reported late Monday by a resident assistant, and the college is investigating. While both the perpetrator and his or her motive are unknown, the graffiti comes in the midst of similar incidents across the country. An article in today’s Los Angeles Times notes that there have been 14 incidents of swastika-related vandalism in New York City since the election, as compared to an average of five to six per month last year.
