CHARLOTTESVILLE — A federal judge has agreed to temporarily suspend the enforcement of a jury’s verdict in the multimillion dollar defamation lawsuit that was found in favor of a University of Virginia administrator. Last month, jurors awarded former UVa associate dean Nicole Eramo $3 million after finding that Rolling Stone magazine, its publisher and author Sabrina Rubin Erdely had defamed her with their November 2014 story “A Rape on Campus.” The story’s centerpiece account of an alleged gang rape at an off-Grounds fraternity house was debunked quickly after the story’s release, leading to a firestorm of controversy and an eventual retraction of the story. In a motion filed Monday, attorneys for the magazine asked Judge Glen Conrad to override the jurors’ verdict, challenging the finding that Erdely had acted with actual malice in scribing misleading statements about Eramo.
