Hundreds of midshipmen from the Naval Academy volunteered to shovel sidewalks and dig out cars in downtown Annapolis on Sunday. "I've never seen snow like this in Annapolis," laughed Midshipman 4th Class Eric Braun as he shoveled a sidewalk on Green Street. "We're just here because we want to help." More than 360 midshipmen signed up for snow-shoveling duty via email and were then divided into teams. The midshipman covered different areas of downtown Annapolis, but a majority were seen shoveling in historic Annapolis and near the gates of the academy. The individual shifts lasted about 90 minutes each. More than 2 feet of snow fell across the region on Friday and Saturday, including a record 29.2 inches at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. City officials reported that Annapolis had about 24 inches of snow by 6:30 p.m. last night.
