On Tuesday, parents are expected to show up in large numbers at the state Capitol to advocate for a bill that would give elementary students at least 20 minutes of recess every day. Through grassroots efforts, especially by a group called "Restore Recess," House Bill 833 — to be heard at 9 a.m. at Morris Hall, room 17 in the House building, by the House K-12 subcommittee — and Senate Bill 1002, were filed last month. Marie-Claire Leman, mother of a Hartsfield Elementary School student, believes that legislators have the "responsibility of providing a uniform educational system across the state." But at some schools, she explained, especially lower-income, Title I schools, students are not given time to participate in recess — referring to both local parents' concerns and Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics findings. "Most often low-performing schools feel the most pressure at the school level to use time they could use that time for more enrichment, more reading... and more seat work," Leman said. "Those kids don't need recess less than anyone else." Continued at www.tallahassee.com/story/news/2016/01/25/parents-go-legislature-support-recess-bill/79300214/ .
