Five Porter County victims of fraud have received cash awards through the Indiana Secretary of State’s Securities Restitution Fund. Secretary of State Connie Lawson announced Thursday that $56,250 was awarded to the five victims. It follows a $32,500 disbursement made in November to victims of the same criminals. Gary Atkinson, of Lafayette, and Donna Harris, of Hammond, pleaded guilty to felony counts of securities fraud and acting as unregistered broker-dealers and were sentenced in September to eight years of probation. Atkinson and Harris offered investment opportunities under the name Dunes Country Mortgage Partners or NovaStar Securities, according to the secretary of state's office.
