Saudi Arabia is on pace to quadruple the number of death sentences it handed out just one year ago. Monday’s execution of Mohammed bin Awadh al-Zahrani, convicted of fatally stabbing fellow tribesman Riad bin Saeed al-Zahrani after a dispute, marked the 53rd death sentence the oil-rich country carried out in January alone. Last year, there were 153 executions in Saudi Arabia — a total that Amnesty International said was the country’s highest in 20 years. The issue of capital punishment in Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia has gained greater international attention following the execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr — a frequent critic of Riyadh.
