Louisville – Two related bills introduced in the Indiana legislature intended to help offset the cost of tolls that Hoosiers would pay to cross three Ohio River bridges at Louisville are dead. Indiana state Sen. Ron Grooms, a Clark County Republican, said Monday in an interview that the bills he introduced earlier this month were referred to the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy and died when the committee leadership recently decided not to call the bills for a hearing. Grooms said the leadership is holding the bills in committee because their enactment would mean taking revenue from the constrained state treasury. Grooms' Senate Bill 228 would have allowed Hoosiers to deduct up to $500 on their annual state income tax payment for money spent on bridge tolls.
