The justices on the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an effort Monday by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to withhold legal fees to lawyers representing former Sen. Wendy Davis and others in a case over redistricting maps. The high court’s inaction allows a lower court’s ruling to stand. The appealate court ordered the state last year to pay more than $1 million in attorneys’ fees in a case challenging district boundaries drawn by the Republican-led Legislature. Cynthia Meyer, a spokeswoman for Paxton, called the court’s decision not to review the case “unfortunate.” “The state shouldn’t have been forced to pay attorney’s fees based on an unconstitutional statute,” she said in an email to the American-Statesman.
