Insurance claims resulting from the Sevier County wildfires are an estimated $842 million, well above the estimate of $500 million in damages announced by officials in December. In response to a News Sentinel request, the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance on Wednesday disclosed its first figures on the claims. The department stated: “The most recent figures (Jan. 6, 2017) show that the Sevier County/Gatlinburg wildfires resulted in 3,947 claims and an estimated $842,245,997.98 combined residential and commercial property losses.” TDCI set four due dates for completion of the insurance reports, with the Jan. 6 totals being the second of the four. The third report is scheduled for Jan. 20 and the fourth and final on Feb. 3.
