Indiana's governor and other statewide elected officeholders would see a sizable pay bump under a plan lawmakers are considering.
The proposal by state Sen. Randy Head would increase the governor’s salary by about $20,000 to at least $141,000, though the change wouldn’t occur until 2021, after Gov. Eric Holcomb’s current term.
Other statewide officeholders would see increases beginning in 2018 of about $25,000 to $41,000 in additional salary, according to a fiscal analysis by the non-partisan Legislative Services Agency. The bill would increase the salaries of the lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state auditor, state treasurer, attorney general and superintendent of public instruction to around $120,000.
“I think the salaries are so low at this point that we drive away talent,” said Head, R-Logansport.
