New ‘bathroom bill’ introduced that allows attorney general to investigate
TOPEKA — Public school students would be required to use the restrooms, locker rooms and shower rooms of their gender at birth, under legislation introduced Thursday.
A similar bill sparked outrage when it surfaced in 2016.
That proposal didn’t advance, but the measure’s lead proponent, Rep. John Whitmer, R-Wichita, has painted this year’s version as more restrained.
The core of the 2017 bill remains the same, however, and Tom Witt, director of the LGBT rights group Equality Kansas, vowed opposition.
The new legislation, House Bill 2171, would allow any Kansas citizen to file a complaint with the attorney general that a public school is in violation of the provisions of the law, provided that the school “does not cure the violation” within three business days after receiving notice.
