WASHINGTON — Republican state Treasurer John Kennedy announced Tuesday he will enter the fiercely competitive battle for the state's open Senate seat. “The reason is pretty simple: I want my country back. I'm scared we are losing it," Kennedy said in a statement. “I worry that America is losing those (conservative) values." Kennedy’s joins several other Republicans vying for the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. David Vitter, who decided not to run for re-election after losing the governor's race to Democrat John Bel Edwards in December. Kennedy ran unsuccessfully for Senate in 2004 (as a Democrat) and in 2008 (as a Republican), but is expected to enter the race as a favorite in part because of his statewide name recognition.
