Lawmaker kills bill to raise tobacco purchase age to 21 in ArizonaA bill to raise the age for tobacco sales to 21 has burned out at the state Capitol. The measure, House Bill 2335, needed a hearing in the House Commerce Committee to advance. But committee chairman Rep. Jeff Weninger, R-Chandler, said he won't hear the bill because he believes it puts an unnecessary restriction on 18-year-olds. The current legal age is 18. While cautioning that he's not a proponent of smoking, Weninger said it came down to a matter of treating an adult like an adult. "If someone is a legal adult and can serve their country in the armed forces, then I believe they can decide whether or not to smoke," Weninger said in a text message. He was unavailable for an interview because lawmakers were tied up with voting on bills.
