Experts outline options for updating Florida death penalty laws to comply with Supreme Court rulingTALLAHASSEE | A group of prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges and researchers have just a few days to come up with a list of recommendations to the Senate for reforming Florida’s death penalty. That was the charge the group received after testifying at the Senate’s Criminal Justice Committee about the ramifications of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said the state’s process for sentencing people to death is unconstitutional. Sen. Greg Evers, R-Crestview, the committee chairman, said the group of experts should have a chance to come up with fixes before lawmakers take a crack at it. Either way, he said, something will be put to a vote. “Before the end of this session, the Florida Senate will pass some type of reform for the death penalty,” he said.
