Asbestos error could cost Arch project $350,000, plus weeks of delayST. LOUIS • Work has restarted on the Gateway Arch’s underground museum after workers exposed asbestos piping, but National Park Service officials think the month-long stoppage will cost about $350,000 and could add weeks to the project schedule. Workers with contractor McCarthy Building Companies cut into asbestos insulation around an old steam pipe on Nov. 3, causing park officials to evacuate the work site and halt renovations. They then realized they had cut the same pipe about a month prior. Kathy Schneider, project manager for the park service, said that removal of asbestos in a building is fairly routine. Work stops and contractors seal off the area, remove the pipe and restart work, usually just a few days later.
