State trooper expresses heartbreak, embarrassment over assault on 11-year-old sonA senior state police trooper who pleaded guilty last week to a misdemeanor assault charge hit his 11-year-old son across his face, according to a court recording released this week. James Patrick Duncan, 44, received 18 months of probation after pleading guilty last Thursday to one count of fourth-degree assault in Washington County Circuit Court. The 18-year Oregon State Police veteran remains on paid administrative leave while police conduct an internal investigation. The Washington County Sheriff's Office investigated the abuse allegations against Duncan. Last week, authorities declined to disclose details about the case because it involved child abuse. The Oregonian/OregonLive requested a recording of Duncan's hearing that provides some insight into what occurred. The assault charge stemmed from the single encounter with his son, but the investigation revealed other incidents involving his 13-year-old daughter, Senior Deputy District Attorney Kevin Barton told the court. The girl disclosed that her father had slapped her before, one time causing her mouth to bleed, Barton said, and had also once twisted her arm in a "police move." Duncan denied performing the move when speaking with investigators. Read more: www.oregonlive.com/oregon-standoff/2016/01/state_trooper_heartbroken_emba.html
