Georgia faces contempt hearing in moving developmentally challenged patients to community-based careGeorgia officials will have to explain to a federal judge why he shouldn’t find the state in contempt of court for multiple alleged failures in moving residents with developmental disabilities and mental illness from hospitals into community settings. Five years ago, Georgia signed on to a settlement agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice that outlined how vulnerable adults and children would be transitioned into community care. Of the estimated 503 residents with developmental disabilities who have moved from state facilities into community-based care, 79 have died, according to court documents filed by the federal government in its request to hold the state in contempt.
