Penn State must pay legal costs of trustees who sued it, court rules
Penn State must pay the attorney fees and legal costs of seven trustees who sued the university to obtain copies of the documents used to produce the controversial Freeh report, an appellate court ruled.
The amount of legal fees involved was not specified by Commonwealth Court. The trustees who sued for the costs are: Edward B. Brown III, Barbara L. Doran, Robert C. Jubelirer, Anthony P. Lubrano, Ryan J. McCombie, William F. Oldsey and Alice W. Pope.
The university-commissioned Freeh report, issued in July 2012, asserted that several of Penn State's top leaders either failed to act on or had a direct hand in concealing early reports about sexual abuse by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
His findings also led directly to the imposition of unprecedented NCAA sanctions on the Penn State football program later that month. Those sanctions - including vacating the football teams wins from 1998 to 2011 and banning the team from the post-season -- were rolled back in January 2015.
