MONTGOMERY – When gay marriage became legal in 2015, some Alabama probate judges temporarily stopped issuing marriage licenses altogether. Colbert County Probate Judge Daniel Rosser was one of them. Rosser, who recently switched from Democrat to Republican, is now a proponent for a bill in the Alabama Legislature to eliminate probate judge’s issuance of marriage licenses. “It makes it a little better for clerks and judges to do their job while also freeing them up to follow their own spiritual beliefs,” he said. “I’m a supporter of the bill for that.” Sen. Greg Albritton’s Senate Bill 20 makes marriage a purely legal transaction, like registering a vehicle, Rosser said.
