Gabby Douglas, Shawn Johnson inducted into US Gymnastics Hall of Fame
Two gymnasts with Iowa ties were inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame, the organization announced Friday.
Shawn Johnson East, of Des Moines, and Gabby Douglas, who trained at Chow's Gymnastics and Dance in West Des Moines, were named hall of famers thanks to impressive international careers.
Johnson, a 2007 world all-around champion, won four medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. During those games, Johnson became just the second U.S. gymnast to win an Olympic gold medal on the balance beam. The 25-year-old also won all-around titles at the 2007 Visa Champions and the 2007 Tyson American Cup, while taking medals home in numerous other competitions.
Johnson has since won ESPN's ESPY award for best U.S. Female Olympian in 2009 and announced her retirement from the sport in 2012. She also trained in West Des Moines under Liang Chow.
