U.S. judge says St. Louis County must include non-major parties candidates on ballots
CLAYTON • A federal court has ordered that moving forward, St. Louis County must include the names of candidates representing non-major parties on county and municipal election ballots. U.S. District Court Judge Ronnie White told the county on Wednesday that it could no longer enforce a charter provision that had limited the options on local ballots to candidates nominated by the parties that received the highest two vote totals in the previous Missouri gubernatorial election. The case grew out of the April, 2015, special election to fill the seat on the County Council vacated when Steve Stenger was elected county executive in 2014. Citing the charter provision, the County Election Board initially declined to include Constitution Party candidate Cindy Redburn on a ballot listing Republican Tony Pousosa and Democrat Kevin O’Leary, the eventual winner of the race.
