Sonic boom that rocked N.J. most likely caused by Navy's stealth fighter jet testhe U.S. Navy is now saying that its Thursday afternoon flight test of a stealth fighter jet — with speeds up to 1,200 mph — may have caused the sonic booms reported along the Jersey Shore. "Today, an F-35C from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. was conducting supersonic testing in a cleared military flight area off the East Coast around 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.," the Navy said in a release. Officials said the test flights were routine and conducted by the Navy's leading testing squadron somewhere off the coast of Maryland, Delaware and South Jersey Thursday afternoon, which the Navy said "may have resulted in sonic booms." The F-35C is the U.S. Navy's first stealth carrier jet, according to Lockheed Martin Corporation's website, the company that designed the aircraft, which can reach speeds up to Mach 1.6 or 1,227 mph.
