The Virginia Senate on Friday passed two bills designed to protect gay and transgender Virginians from discrimination in housing and in public employment. The Senate also pulled back on a bill that would allow clerks of courts and their deputies to refuse to issue marriage licenses by citing their own personal religious, moral or ethical objection. Sponsored by Sen. Jennifer T. Wexton, D-Loudoun, Senate Bill 67 would make it illegal to discriminate against LGBT individuals seeking housing. It passed 25-15 with the support of all 19 Democratic senators and six of 21 Republican senators. Senate Bill 12, sponsored by Sens. Adam P. Ebbin, D-Alexandria, and A. Donald McEachin, D-Henrico, would codify the prohibition of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in both state and local government hiring. The legislation, which also passed 25-15 with bipartisan support, would expand on an executive order Gov. Terry McAuliffe signed providing protection against discrimination in state employee hiring.
