U.S. House District 19 candidates hone in on faith and family issues
Lubbock County Republican Chairman Carl Tepper said Christian morals are under “full frontal assault” in the United States, and because they’re still prevailing in West Texas, Tepper said voters in the area will be sending a representative to fight for those morals.
Hence the “Faith & Family Forum” on Tuesday night that featured all nine candidates running for U.S. House District 19. More than 200 people gathered at the Rock City Event Center to hear from the candidates. Tepper and Chad Hasty, host of his namesake show on KFYO-AM, moderated the debate.
The candidates running to replace the outgoing U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Lubbock, who has held the seat since 2003, are former Texas Tech Vice Chancellor Jodey Arrington, farmer Jason Corley, Platinum Bank head Greg Garrett, veterinarian John Key, retired surgeon Donald May (aka Mr. Conservative), farmer Don Parrish, Lubbock Mayor Glen Robertson, retired U.S. Air Force Col. Michael Bob Starr and a director of nursing in Smyer,
DeRenda Warren. They are all running as Republicans.
Given the answers, it’s fair to assume District 19 will be sending a socially conservative representative to Washington, as all nine candidates agreed the courts should not be deciding same-sex marriage and would fight against it, would not allow transgender people to use restrooms according to their identity, believe in protecting religious freedom and are against abortions and would vote to halt funds to Planned Parenthood.
