A bipartisan bill to bring New Mexico driver’s licenses into compliance with the federal Real ID law was introduced in the Senate today. It’s significant because it’s sponsored by two Senate leaders whose driver’s license bill last year passed the Senate overwhelmingly, with bipartisan support. Senate Republican Leader Stuart Ingle of Portales and Democratic Senate Finance Chairman John Arthur Smith are sponsoring this year’s Senate Bill 256. It creates two tiers of driver’s licenses: a Real ID compliant driver’s license that would be available to citizens and others who are here legally, and a driving privilege card that would be available to undocumented immigrants and to anybody else who wanted it. That means citizens of New Mexico would not be required to get Real ID compliant licenses. Read more: www.abqjournal.com/716168/politics/smith-ingle-introduce-drivers-license-bill.html
