Augusta gun rights case properly dismissed, according to Georgia Supreme Court rulingThe Georgia Supreme Court has ruled a gun rights case was properly dismissed in Richmond County Superior Court, according to an opinion released Monday. Georgiacarry.org filed a civil petition on behalf of Iziah Smith in 2014, seeking to force Richmond County Probate Judge Harry James to issue Smith a temporary permit to carry a concealed weapon. Smith applied for a permit renewal and a temporary permit on Jan. 6, 2014. The temporary permit was not issued, but Smith’s renewal was approved before the end of the month and before Smith’s permit from the previous year expired. Because Smith got his renewal and James began issuing temporary permits to others, Smith’s mandamus — a petition that seeks to force a public official or government to do what is required by law — the issue was moot, the Supreme Court ruled. chronicle.augusta.com/news/crime-courts/2016-02-01/augusta-gun-rights-case-properly-dismissed-according-georgia-supreme?v=1454330129
