NEWARK — The lawyers for Bridgegate defendants Bridget Anne Kelly and Bill Baroni urged a federal judge Monday to throw out the cases against the former allies of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, saying federal prosecutors stretched the law too far. In court papers filed late Monday, the lawyers argued impeding traffic flow is not a civil rights violation, and that the inadequate evidence shared with them unfairly hampers their defense. The filings are the latest salvos in the legal war over the September 2013 lane restrictions that caused massive traffic tie-ups in Fort Lee, allegedly as political retribution. Michael Critchley, Kelly's attorney, said U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman cited laws normally used in theft and bribery cases to level charges against Kelly and former Port Authority executive Bill Baroni where no theft or bribery is alleged to have occurred.
