Gov. Rick Scott requested Tuesday that the U.S. Small Business Administration make a physical disaster declaration for Lee and Sarasota counties, and offer low-interest SBA disaster loans to affected households and businesses that qualify following the tornadoes that struck last month. In a letter to the Small Business Administration, Scott cited the damage from the tornado that hit Siesta Key early on Jan. 17 in seeking the disaster assistance. He did not request similar assistance for a tornado that hit the same morning in northeast Manatee. That tornado killed two people but caused less physical damage in the rural area. Scott said assessments showed the Sarasota County tornado caused major damage or destruction of at least two businesses and 24 homes, meeting the federal threshold of 25 homes or businesses sustaining uninsured losses of 40 percent or more.
