A lawsuit filed in Ohio on Monday argues that the phrase “In God We Trust” does not belong on U.S. currency.
The suit was filed by Michael Newdow, a California lawyer who has previously argued that the words “under God” should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance, the Associated Press reports. Newdow now represents 41 plaintiffs, many of them atheists, who view the phrase’s usage on money as a violation of the separation of church and state, and therefore unconstitutional.
