Virginia House votes to require physical activity for kids in grades K-5 RICHMOND -- It appears Virginia’s young schoolchildren soon will be guaranteed a chance to get their wiggles out. For the first time, the House of Delegates passed legislation Thursday requiring at least 20 minutes of physical activity per day, or an average of 100 minutes per week, for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Sen. John Miller, D-Newport News, has gotten similar legislation passed in the state Senate for years only to see it killed in the House. But the Republican-controlled lower chamber proved more receptive this year when the measure came from a Republican, Del. Manoli Loupassi of Richmond. His bill, HB357, passed easily, 72-26. The new requirement would become effective in the 2018-19 school year. The state already requires at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity for students in grades six through 12.
