The Marshall Islands elected two presidents in January, and both were educated at Oregon universities. The Nitijela, the Pacific island's parliament, elected Casten Nemra to the presidency in January but ousted the onetime Portland State University student 17 days later. Lawmakers replaced him with Hilda Heine, a University of Oregon grad. "Never before has the nation's parliament seen so many 'firsts' as leadership struggles play out in the first weeks of the new Nitijela," writer Giff Johnson said in The Marshall Islands Journal. The island midway between Hawaii and Australia is home to more than 52,000 people. Nemra was 44 when he was elected Jan. 4 on a 17-16 count, making him the republic's youngest-ever leader, according to media reports. His victory also marked the first time a president was elected from one political party while the country's speaker and vice speaker were elected from another party, according to The Journal.
