House Democrats on Tuesday filed a bill to require auditing and tighter oversight of a contingency fund that Gov. Susana Martinez used to pay for a staff holiday party in December at a downtown Santa Fe hotel. They added the bill on the Republican governor’s contingency fund to a package of proposed ethics reforms that were announced late last year after the resignation of Secretary of State Dianna Duran, who pleaded guilty in a corruption case. House Minority Leader Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe, said in a statement Tuesday that the governor’s contingency fund is “the only fund in the state that is not subject to an audit.” Lawmakers have appropriated about $70,000 annually for Martinez’s use. Martinez and her predecessors as governor have received the money for “purposes connected with the obligations of the office,” according to state law. Many governors have used it for expenses, such as entertaining at the governor’s mansion.
