Texas Tech Vice Chancellor Opperman named new interim presidentTexas Tech’s Board of Regents selected John Opperman as the university’s new interim president as of Jan. 22 and announced a search committee was formed to find a permanent president. Opperman is currently vice chancellor of academic affairs, a position he was named to in June. According to his bio on the Texas Tech website, in that role he is responsible for systemwide strategic planning, academic affairs and policy development, and he collaborates with university presidents, provosts and academic leadership on academic initiatives, programs and procedures. Before being appointed as vice chancellor of academic affairs, he had served as vice chancellor of policy and planning since 2002, overseeing strategic planning for the Tech system and academic policy issues assigned by the chancellor. The Tech system’s Board of Regents met via teleconference Thursday morning to discuss leadership options after Tech President M. Duane Nellis’ announcement he would step down as president.
