Gov. Kenneth Mapp submitted three solid waste reduction and recycling bills drafted in order to “clean up the territory” to the V.I. Legislature last week. Mapp introduced the need for better waste management during his Jan. 25 State of the Territory address, introducing three bills mandating recycling, banning plastic bags, and reducing overall trash output. He submitted the legislation to Senate President Neville James on Feb. 2, and the bills currently are being reviewed by the Legislature’s legal counsel. A date has not yet been set to hear the bills, according to James’ office. “It is those of us who live here who trash the Virgin Islands,” Mapp said in his address. “I ask the people of the Virgin Islands not to force your government to impose a tax on the community simply to clean up behind ourselves. We are a better people than that.” Read more: www.virginislandsdailynews.com/news/local/mapp-submits-three-recycle-reduce-reuse-bills-to-senate/article_5f099a7e-5b87-55a3-a196-709f3c80b25a.html
