State Of Connecticut Awards $6 Million To Miguel Roman, Wrongly Imprisoned For Years
Miguel Roman, released from prison in 2008 after DNA tests showed that he was wrongfully imprisoned for more than 20 years for a murder he did not commit, was awarded $6 million on Monday by the state of Connecticut.
In the award decision, Claims Commissioner J. Paul Vance Jr. apologized to Roman "for the burden that he was forced to suffer" during two decades behind bars away from his three children.
Roman was "labeled a murderer and was forced to spend a long portion of his life in maximum-security prisons where he experienced 20 years of fear, sleepless nights and the constant isolation that he faced in prison as an innocent man," Vance wrote in the decision.
Vance said that while the award attempts to compensate Roman for the time he was wrongfully imprisoned, "no words or dollar amount will suffice to give him back the time that he lost and the misery that he endured."
