SANTA FE – Senate Democrats complained Tuesday that the Martinez administration and House Republicans are too focused on crime at the expense of doing something about New Mexico’s hurting economy. House Republicans countered that public safety tops the list of their constituents’ concerns and curbing crime is essential to economic development. The exchanges occurred in separate news conferences with nine days remaining in the 30-day legislative session – and as another plant closing was announced in Albuquerque. Majority Senate Democrats, alongside representatives of teachers unions and advocates for children and the poor, said crime should be fought at the “front end,” with job creation and sufficient funding for education.
