AUGUSTA, GA -- “Boneheaded” and “stupid” were the words former Augusta fire marshal Jason Beard used to describe his conduct when confronted with evidence of payoffs from local nightclubs, according to the audio recording of his first meeting with FBI agents played Wednesday in U.S. District Court. Beard has pleaded not guilty to six counts of extortion and one count of attempted extortion. Defense witnesses began testifying Wednesday after federal prosecutors rested their case. Jurors listened to a recording of FBI Special Agent Charles McKee’s first meeting with Beard on Jan. 24, 2015. When asked what he did for Harold Green Jr. at Rendezvous at Three, Beard said that in exchange for $150 he would not send a fire officer to work at the nightclub. He did the same for club promoter Eurl Kittles at Level 9 Bar and Grill, Beard said.
