A state legislator has introduced a bill pushed by a former Augustan that would force day care centers to adopt additional safety measures. House Bill 953 was filed Tuesday, with Rep. Billy Mitchell, of Stone Mountain, as the lead sponsor. Three Augusta legislators – Reps. Gloria Frazier, Brian Prince and Wayne Howard – signed on as co-sponsors. The bill would amend Article 1 of Chapter 1A of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to general provisions relative to early care and learning, according to a summary of the legislation. It would require annual safety inspections of day care centers, family day care homes, and group day care homes; require recordkeeping of annual inspections; provide for legislative findings; provide for related matters; repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes. The safety inspection would require all day cares to comply with a 10-point checklist that includes inspecting vehicle tires, having first aid kits in every room and checking playground equipment for wear and tear damage. The inspection would take place during the second week of July, which would be named Anthony DeJuan Child Care Week.
