An Oregon man was convicted Tuesday of orchestrating an elaborate scheme that exploited Colorado's flawed conservation easement program and allowed him to pocket about $3.5 million. Alan DeAtley, 60, of Medford, Ore., was convicted in Denver District Court on 22 charges that included forgery, theft and tax evasion, as well as one count related to organized crime. DeAtley, who was acquitted on three charges of tax evasion, faces up to 100 years in prison. He is scheduled for sentencing on April 7. His victims include auto dealer John Medved, several real estate developers, and Sheri and Richard Schmelzer, the inventors of Jibbitz, the charms that fit into the holes of Crocs shoes.
