The Louisville Zoo Thursday presented plans for $180 million in new exhibits and improvements that could include an African savanna park where animals mingle, shark tanks and a re-creation of an earlier Kentucky complete with flatboat rides and wild animals. The master plan includes a vision for the zoo as "the region's leading zoological and botanical resource for conservation, education and scientific study, and the top choice for quality, family fun." Although the new master plan proposes extensive capital investment through 2028, a zoo official said it will be highly unlikely that all - or even most - of the projects will become reality, especially within that timeframe. Zoo Director John Walczak said he expects that the past model of about 30 percent public and 70 percent private funding for projects -- with donations from foundations, corporations and individuals -- will prevail.
