Supporters of railroad consolidation in Springfield are approximately $45 million toward a goal of combining local train traffic on a single corridor, with an estimated $270 million to go. They also are counting on an infusion of state money in the near future. The figures released prior to a rail consolidation open house at the Prairie Capital Convention Center on Thursday include federal, state and local money spent and anticipated for long-term plans to move Union Pacific and Amtrak trains from Third to 10th Street. The open house outlined plans for 10th Street underpasses at Ash and Laurel streets. A federal transportation-improvement grant of $14.4 million for construction of an underpass scheduled to open this summer at Carpenter Street has been the single largest amount awarded to date. But another $500 million was included for rail projects nationwide in a recently approved federal transportation budget.
