House panel approves minimum wage hike, sets up final voteSALEM — A House committee approved steep increases to the minimum wage Monday night, sending the bill to the full chamber for a final vote. The House Business and Labor Committee approved Senate Bill 1532, which raises wages to $14.75 in the Portland area over the next six years. It came at the end of a tempestuous day at Capitol, in which Republicans held up a floor vote on marijuana legislation for hours and Democrats pushed through a bill to rid Oregon of coal-fired electricity. People for and against raising the minimum wage testified late into the evening, reprising their pitches for likely the last time. After more than five hours of hearings Monday, the committee passed the bill on a party line vote, 6-5, with no changes. It came with remarkable speed, just two business days after the Senate passed the bill after a six-hour floor debate.
