JUNEAU, Alaska—Sen. Pete Kelly, a Fairbanks Republican who co-chairs the Senate Finance Committee, last week introduced Senate Bill 174 to override the Board of Regents' longstanding policy against firearms on university campuses. Under the legislation, the university could only regulate open carry of weapons, restrict when people can use them and prohibit possession in restricted access areas that require additional screening for entry. Current policy only allows students, employees and other members of the public to bring guns onto campus if the weapons stay in a locked vehicle. In an interview with the News-Miner, Kelly said he was inspired to introduce the legislation after seeing mass shootings.
