SANTA FE – A House-approved attempt to create a New Mexico ethics commission that would investigate complaints against legislators, other elected officials and lobbyists ran into a thicket of technical questions in its first Senate committee Monday. However, at least one senator insisted he wasn’t trying to kill the measure with his critiques – which included questions about how long terms for ethics commission members would be. “We’re going to take a look at the language and make sure we get it right,” Sen. Daniel Ivey-Soto, D-Albuquerque, told reporters after Monday’s hearing in the Senate Rules Committee. The proposed ethics commission, House Joint Resolution 5, was sparked by recent scandals involving New Mexico elected officials.
