Bill would make St. Patrick’s Day a school holiday for someIn some cases it’s the day after St. Patrick’s Day when people — and not just those claiming a family connection to the Emerald Isle — would like to have a day off. But State Sen. Tony Avella, D-Queens, thinks New York’s schoolchildren in green-tinted districts should get off the holiday itself. Avella has introduced a bill that would make St. Patrick’s Day a school holiday “in districts with a significant Irish population” — 7.5 percent or greater, according to the most current Census data. The bill language correctly notes that the percentage would be the “Irish-American” population of such districts. (You’ll have a hard time finding any school district that’s 7.5 percent or more Irish outside of Ireland and maybe the British Isles.) Avella, a lawmaker who has proven himself to be exquisitely responsive to the desires of the many ethnic groups within his district, introduced the bill in response to the city Department of Education’s announcement that parent-teacher conferences would be held on St. Patrick’s Day.
